Chapter 7

Another day, another lecture on quantitative economic and business analysis. Gabi had signed up for extra classes, wanted extra credit. But her mind was not on the subject. As usual since the day he arrived, Dylan saturated her thoughts. Images of him were swimming around in her mind, her body reacted just thinking about him, humming with a desire she’d never experienced before.

Four thirty PM and the lecture was over. That was the last one for that day. She was glad. She wanted to get off the grounds and have a night out with Flo. Walking along the grass and around the Bailieu Fountain, Gabi was suddenly grabbed by the arm and twisted around. She gasped and was just about to scream when she realised Aiden was standing there. She looked up at him startled. He looked so pale and seemed to be a bundle of nerves.

“I’m sorry to scare you, Gabi,” he said panting slightly.

“Aiden. What are you doing here?” she asked, becoming really concerned. What was happening? Why had Aiden tracked her down at the university? Her own nervous system went into overdrive. Something wasn’t right.

“Dylan’s been arrested,” he said letting go of her arm.

“Arrested?” Gabi gasped. She was horrified. What on earth for?

“Yeah. The police came by our place late last night. He was arrested for assault. You’re the only one who can help him, Gabi. He wouldn’t let me go to his boss, Rob. He said it would be an embarrassment to his company and...he’s kind of worried about losing his job.”

Gabi was listening and trying to take it all in. Shock began to chill her to the bone. Then anger. Her mind went straight to one person. James. He really was a vindictive, little man.

“And he asked for me?” she wondered out loud.

Aiden looked at something off in the distance, not meeting her gaze. “Not exactly,” he said. His eyes turned back to her. “But I don’t know anyone else I can go to for help who won’t be affected and who can help him without it becoming bigger than it is.” He paused for a moment then added, “And...from what I saw at the beach I can tell you two have, well, a connection?”

Now she understood. She also knew that Dylan wouldn’t like it and would probably turn her help away. He was an independent man. He was a proud man. But she had to do something. He was in this situation because he had defended her.

“How much is the bail?” she asked.

“Ten thousand.”

Gabi gasped. “That’s outrageous!” James was really going all out to get his revenge on Dylan, she thought grimly. His father was probably connected with the judge. Hell, his father probably appointed the judge.

“I know,” Aiden replied. “We don’t have that kind of money. Dylan’s a good guy, Gabi. He doesn’t deserve this. He wouldn’t tell me what happened but I know him. We’ve been pals for almost six years now. The only time I’ve ever seen him fight is to defend himself or someone else.
